Rosacea

What is Rosacea?

Rosacea is a chronic, inflammatory skin condition that most often affects the face. If left untreated Rosacea worsens over time. It is often mistaken for acne, eczema, or a skin allergy.

What causes Rosacea?

Unfortunately the causes of rosacea are not fully understood but some suggested causes are;
- Blood vessels in the skin dilating too easily that cause the flushing, persistent redness and visible blood vessels.
- People with a light skin colour are more likely to develop rosacea compared to other people with a darker skin type.
- A reaction to microscopic mites (Demodex folliculorum). These mites live on human skin and usually cause no problems. People who suffer from Rosacea have a higher number of these mites than other people do. It is unclear however if the higher number of mites causes the rosacea or whether the rosacea causes the higher number of mites.

What triggers Rosacea?

There are a number of things that have been shown to trigger Rosacea including exposure to sunlight, stress, hot or cold weather, hot drinks, caffeine or alcohol and spicy food.

How can I treat Rosacea?

While avoiding these causes can improve rosacea, oral medications and creams and gels applied to the skin can also help. Laser and LED light also reduces inflammation and visible blood vessels, improving the appearance of skin.
